Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the checker, our sources and your privacy.

Is Cleared to Travel free?

Yes. There's no charge and no sign-up. The site is paid for by adverts, which always sit below the answer.

Are you a visa agency?

No. We never charge for permits and we only link to official government sites. Unofficial sites often charge several times the official fee for the same form.

Where do your rules come from?

From official government sources only: the destination's government and your own government's travel advice. Every answer shows the date we last checked it and links to the sources.

How often do you check the rules?

Every month, and every week for rules with a deadline coming up. If a rule changes, it goes in our public rule changes log.

What happens to the details I enter?

They stay on your device. The checker works in your browser and doesn't send your passport details or trips to us. Your last trip is saved in your browser so you can come back to it, and you can clear it at any time.

Does leaving the Schengen area reset my 90 days?

No. On any day, you count back 180 days and add up the days you spent in the Schengen area. Days only drop off once they're more than 180 days ago. Our guide to the 90/180 rule has worked examples.

Do the days I arrive and leave count?

Yes. In the Schengen area, the day you arrive and the day you leave both count as full days, even if you land late at night.

I have two passports. Which should I use?

Add both to the checker and it will tell you which to use for each country. In general, enter and leave a country on the same passport, book your tickets with it, and always use your own country's passport to go home.

Can I rely on your answer?

We work hard to keep every rule accurate, but we're a planning guide, not legal advice. Border officers make the final decision, and rules can change at short notice. Always confirm with the official source before you travel.

Which countries do you cover?

16 destinations, including all 29 Schengen countries, for 6 passports: the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

I've spotted a mistake. What should I do?

Use the "Report something wrong" button next to the rule. A link to the official source helps us check it faster.
