Visiting Denmark

Denmark is in the EU and the Schengen area, but it keeps its own currency, the Danish krone. Greenland and the Faroe Islands belong to the Kingdom of Denmark but are outside the Schengen area.

What you need, by passport

Quick answers

Do I need a visa to visit Denmark?

Not for a short visit on a US, UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area. Irish citizens can live and work there with no time limit.

Is Denmark in the Schengen area?

Yes, since 25 March 2001. Time you spend in Denmark counts towards your 90 days in any 180, together with every other Schengen country.

Do I need ETIAS for Denmark?

Not yet. When it starts, you'll need to apply online for ETIAS before you travel. It will cost €20 (free if you're under 18 or over 70) and last 3 years or until your passport expires. There's no start date yet: the EU says it will announce it several months ahead. Until then, don't pay any website for it.

How long does my passport need to be valid for Denmark?

Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive, and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave the Schengen area.

Good to know in Denmark

Greenland and the Faroes. Greenland and the Faroe Islands aren't in the EU or the Schengen area, so travelling there from Denmark means leaving the Schengen area. Take your passport. You don't need a visa with a US, UK, Irish, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport.

Border checks with Germany. Denmark is running temporary checks at its land and sea borders with Germany, currently until 11 May 2027. Keep your passport with you, as you may be asked to show it.

Krone, cards and cash. Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro. Many shops, cafés and restaurants are cashless, but some smaller shops and supermarkets don't take international credit cards.
