Not for a short visit on a US, UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area. Irish citizens can live and work there with no time limit.
Is Slovenia in the Schengen area?
Yes, since 21 December 2007. Time you spend in Slovenia counts towards your 90 days in any 180, together with every other Schengen country.
Do I need ETIAS for Slovenia?
Not yet. When it starts, you'll need to apply online for ETIAS before you travel. It will cost €20 (free if you're under 18 or over 70) and last 3 years or until your passport expires. There's no start date yet: the EU says it will announce it several months ahead. Until then, don't pay any website for it.
How long does my passport need to be valid for Slovenia?
Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive, and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave the Schengen area.
Good to know in Slovenia
E-vignette for motorways. You need an e-vignette to drive on Slovenia's toll roads. For a car it costs €16 for a week, €32 for a month or €117.50 for a year. Buy it on the official DARS site: unofficial resellers add fees and may not register it, leaving you without a valid one.
Tourist tax. Your accommodation adds a tourist tax per person per day, plus a promotion tax of 25% on top. In Ljubljana, 7 to 18-year-olds pay half.
Staying in a private home. If you stay in someone's home, the owner must register you with the police within 3 days of arrival. Hotels and other tourist accommodation do this for you.
